New to the Boundary Waters? If you have never paddled the Boundary Waters or Quetico Provincial Park (Canadian side), it is literally a land of 1000’s of lakes. There are no defined routes. You can spend days on a single large lake like Seagull lake exploring all of the islands. Or you can portage to other smaller lakes and explore other lakes. Want to fish? Fishing is really good in many of the lakes. My thought is if we have people who want to fish, we will camp in the same site for two nights and those that want to fish can fish and those who want to explore can take day trips. Our planned entry point will be number 55, which is at the end of Gunflint Trail approximately 55 miles northwest of Grand Marais, MN
Arrive at Seagull Outfitters Saturday, Sept 18. Spend night in the Seagull Outfitter bunk house or nearby campground. (TBD) Seagull Outfitters is basically at the end of Gun Flint Trail, northwest of Grand Marais, MN (Far northeast corner of the state.)
Paddle Sept 19 - 24.
Spend night of Sept 24 in the Seagull Outfitter bunk house or nearby campground (TBD)
Depart Seagull Outfitters Saturday, Sept 25.
Trip will be self supported with wilderness camping.
Note, it is a 2 1/2 day drive to Seagull Outfitters. Duluth, MN, is the closest airport. Last year, one group flew in and out of Duluth and shared the cost of a rental car. Teresa and I will be driving up and can carry gear and boats.
A word about boats and crew size. By the BWCA regulations crews are limited to a maximum of 9 people and 4 boats. So do the math, we cannot all take solo boats. Light weight tandem canoes are highly recommended as they make paddling and portaging much easier. The canoes need to be light enough to be carried by one person. Do not worry about boats at this time. If you want to go, please register. I will have a meeting for all participants the last week of August to figure out boats and such. High quality lightweight canoes are available for renting at Seagull Outfitters for $47-$50/day.
