Cahaba
River, Alabama (Photos below)
Class I
May 21 – 23 , 2004
Trip Leader: Susan Moffatt
The Cahaba
River
is a beautiful, free-flowing river in Alabama,
south of Birmingham, that puts on a spectacular
display in May of the endangered Cahaba
lilies. These flowers grow in only a few rivers in Alabama
and are threatened because they require very pure water flowing over their
rocky habitat. Imagine paddling through clumps of head-high green daylily-like
foliage filled with white blossoms, sort of like a forest
of Easter
lilies. These are nothing like the water lilies you see in swamps and lakes.
The club has only done this trip once in the last several
years, and it’s time to do it again. The river is fast-flowing and some minimal
paddling skills are needed to maneuver through the rocky channels and beds of
lilies. If you’re planning to head for the Nantahala early, consider going by
way of the Cahaba.
We’ll camp at nearby Brierfield
Ironworks
Historical
State Park.
$10 per night per site for the first 4 people ($2.50 each additional person),
$18 if you need water and electricity hook-ups ($3 each additional person).
DIRECTIONS: From Birmingham
take I-65 South to Alabama Highway 25 Exit. Go south on Hwy 25 approximately 15
miles. Park entrance is on the left.
We’ll paddle on Saturday and then hike on Sunday at Oak
Mountain
State Park
near Birmingham.
