Retired & Trippin' – Report 3

We arrived at our campsite just outside of Lake George, NY with no problems.    We encountered some small amount of rain during the drive but nothing to slow us down.    The most difficult part of the driving has been holding my speed under 60 mph.    We're trying to average around 250 miles per day each time we change camps and that's hard to do after years of racing to and from vacation locations in the Rockies and Smokey's.

Lake George is located in the southeastern "corner" of the huge Adirondack Park.     It's something of a "high dollar" town because of the number of wealthy New Yorkers owing summer homes in the area.    The lake is bordered on the east and west sides by mountain ridges.    It's reputed to be one of the last lakes in the country where residents along the shoreline draw their water for their homes because of its purity.    We met up with a couple of fellow RV'ers who own a lakeside home and had invited us to tour the lake with them on their boat.    The most interesting part of the lake is the large number of islands that can reserved for camping and picnicking.    In addition, a number of the islands have private homes on them.        Since tourism is the main industry in the area, all the small towns have their own concentrations of shops, galleries and eateries.    These downtown areas are reminiscent of Gatlinburg, TN.    On our first foray into the parks interior we drove a small loop of highways into the lower central part of the park.    We never drove very far that we didn't encounter water in the form of streams, rivers and lakes…..including torrential downpours.     On another day we drove a larger loop that included Lake Placid.    We saw several of the locations where our Olympic athletes practice for the winter games.    Again, another small town with a main street lined with shops, etc.    I wanted to take a day of sailing lessons but they only do that in the spring so I'll have to put that on a back burner.

We're seeing a lot of great scenery and interesting little towns.    When it rains too much we stay in and relax by reading or watching the tube.    Gas pricing hasn't been to bad if we stay from the popular tourist areas and interstate exchange locations.

Next stop will be the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
